Condolence From: Gerry & Nell de Graaf,(nee van Ruiten) and Mary Lems, van Ruiten
Condolence: Ben and Arlene were regular visitors to St Monica's church in Tugun on their annual escape from the Canadian winter to the tropical climes of Queensland Australia. It was on one of those visits that we were introduced to Ben and Arlene and with Nell and Mary having the same surname we knew that Ben had to be family and later indeed this was confirmed. We have had the great pleasure of having enjoyed the company of Ben and Arlene on several occasions as well keeping social contact through the internet.
Ben was a remarkable gentleman, still sporting shorts in his late eighties actually looking more like being in his early sixtees.
Our thoughts are with Arlene and her family knowing that Ben will look after them from his heavenly abode.
May God bless and strenghten you in this time of sorrow.

On behalf of the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada I would like to extend our sincere condolences on Col Ben’s passing. Ben has been an icon in Manitoba’s military fabric. He was a devout supporter of Canada’s Reservists and our military. His work with the Winnipeg Military Family Resource Centre was stellar. He was a true friend of our regiment and the Camerons will miss him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

Condolence From: Sandra Doody
Condolence: I am truly saddened by the death of Ben. I feel very blessed that I had the opportunity to meet such an extraordinary man. Ben’s kind and gentle spirit always lit up any room he entered. He never let you get away with just a simple “Hi, how are you?” You always received the full “Ben Embrace” as I like to call it. To me, those are the memories I will hold on to.
His passing will leave a void in my life, but also I know it will within the hearts of everyone who knew him. Ben’s memory will always remain deep within my heart. Peace be with you Ben.
