I am the Associate Priest at St. Paul's Anglican in Charlottetown, PEI. I was ordained 4 October 2001. That I can state that fact, is due to Jim Allan. He changed my life. And by extension, changed the lives of my family and many parishioners. Bishop Jim came to our Diocese and brought with him an idea of alternate ordained ministries. In April of 1991 he spoke at a neighbouring Anglican church's Men's Group event I attended and described a vision of individuals with a call to ministry but not to full time paid service. Our Diocesan Bishop, Archbishop Arthur Peters, embraced the concept and presented it to our Diocesan Synod creating a program of Non-Stipendiary Ordained Ministry. In 1992 I was accepted into Postulancy following approval at ACPO and I commenced an 8 year process of University courses, residential training and practical ministry. It was talking with Jim and his support for my ministry, and his talking with my rector, that led to the training. Over his years in NS/PEI he became a favoured friend and mentor. Jim was like Paul and Apollos - he planted the seed and initially watered it. Then he left and others continued the husbandry and in the end I "matured" into a priest in God's church. Knowing that Jim has died brings a sadness but also a remembered joy that his commitment to alternate ministries resulted in many people reaching their calls and for me, a road less traveled and a life much more enriched.
